The similarities between giftedness and stimulus processing

Gifted and sensitive to stimuli

Although not much research has been done into the relationship between gifted and sensory information processing problems, we do see a group of children who are so overburdened by sensory stimuli that they are unable to use their potential.

Similarities between stimulus processing problems and giftedness

  1. The limbic system is very intense and reactive (difficulty controlling emotion)
  2. The brain processes and uses more pathways and connections than a neurotypical brain (so it’s not surprising that these children are often overstimulated)
  3. A very strong need to succeed (perfectionism) and a fear of making mistakes.
  4. Hypersensitive to certain stimuli [read more about over- and under-stimulation]
  5. A keen sense of “the big picture” … understanding of highly complex life concepts at a much younger age
  6. Emotional development often lags behind intellectual development (although parents/teachers/caregivers often expect more from them, simply based on giftedness)
  7. Rigid and inflexible
  8. Difficulties with change and transitions
  9. Difficulties with social interaction, often preferring to be alone
  10. Difficulty reading social cues
  11. Highly concentrated on specific cognitive skills

Sensory Tools and Strategies for Gifted Children

Never underestimate the power of a sensory aid.
Since kindergarten, we have been using sensory strategies and tools to help my gifted son to help regulate himself throughout the school day. One of the pillars was (and still is) a chewing chain. Especially in circle situations, but also during instructions or waiting moments, chewing helped him to sit quietly and stay focused.

Both gifted children and stimulus-sensitive children benefit from sensory stimuli to calm their body and mind.
