Review Chewigem Hexichew

“Wow: what is this!”

I have a fidget box that contains the hexichew of the Chewigem brand and this is about the standard reaction I get to the hexichew. And I get that. It looks quite impressive: big, sturdy and robust. Most children I know are curious and always dive into the box with their hands when it is on the table. It’s a fight over everything they can try out in fidget products: twiddles, tangles, fidget cube, putty and so on. But, the hexichew is frighteningly impressive, as it turns out.

Or, they have never seen anything like it before, that is also possible. Because, it is striking that children always first grab the things they have already seen. And have tried. First everything that is already known, or at least a bit like something they know. That makes the world nice and safe and predictable. Quite nice if you are already struggling to hold your own in the world. But they don’t know that big, rubbery wheel with big buttons on it. That is not in the toy store or in the fidget box at school.

Chewigem as a Hand Fidget or Chewing Fidget

Sorry by the way, if you have a horror image of that hexichew now. Any visual thinker now has an immense, imposing chewing fidget in his head. Is it so big that it almost doesn’t fit in your mouth, that’s right… I have had that tested by several children with very big mouths….it doesn’t work.

This large wheel-like chew product can’t go all the way into your mouth. And with that, the chewing need of children (or parents) who think it is important that you “do as you should” is by definition not satisfied. Because, you can gnaw and chew on it a bit, but it doesn’t look really fresh: the saliva quickly runs down your arms or drips onto the table.

Hexichew for chewing

If you use this hexichew to gnaw on in the safe environment of home where no one can see you, it does what it is intended for: it calms down wonderfully due to the enormous amount and intensity of proprioceptive stimuli. It hurts my jaws: that’s how hard you can chew on it! So: for the chewers with a large chewing need, this chewing fidget for at home can be a handy solution.

Yet that was not what the children in my practice would want to use the hexichew for. Do I have children with less need to chew? That’s possible. But, I think they especially want to be “normal”. And, with such a huge wheel in your mouth, you are a bit “crazy”. At least, that’s what they say, isn’t it? It looks different and a bit dirty; when all that saliva runs everywhere.

Chewigem for fidgeting

Do they not use it at all? Yes, it is! As a delicious large hand fidget, which you can fidget with with two hands! Also very nice, if you need something slightly different (where you use more muscle power) than the smooth and rhythmic movement of a tangles, for example????.
