Increased burden for children with ADHD. Just a hot item in the news this week.
In Germany, schools are said to be stocking up on weighted vests en masse and this trend is also emerging in the Netherlands. This worries me!
Care must be taken when using aids
Weighting can certainly help children and not just children with ADHD. However, the use in the classroom as well as the use of other aids in the classroom does require the necessary expertise and knowledge. For example, I recently observed a toddler with problems in stimulus processing. He wore a weighted vest. I asked the teacher to what extent she looked at what he needed with the toddler, at which times more pressure than at other times. Unfortunately, the teacher did not have an answer. She gave him the vest in the morning in the circle (because then there was unrest) and then the vest stayed on for the rest of the morning until he went home.
Using expertise in aids
And unfortunately I also regularly see children wearing hearing protectors all day long. In this way, these children do not have the chance to get used to more sounds. As a result, these children have more and more difficulty with sound stimuli. It is better to offer them a quiet sound stimulus by means of an mp3 player or selectively use the hearing protector for 15 minutes.
As a professional, I am very concerned that some schools indiscriminately use aids without or perhaps with insufficient know-how. I therefore hope that schools will make use of the expertise of experts such as SI therapists or psychologists/pedagogues with knowledge of stimulus processing when purchasing and deploying aids.
[From my background, I can advise schools and parents on the purchase and use of our sensory products and aids.
And possibly refer for more help.]
